I just came across WhiteBand.org - one of the websites connected to the recent, cleverly titled campaign, Make Poverty History, taking place during the G8 summit in the UK.

WhiteBand.org has as its heading ... Global Call to Action Against Poverty.

I must say that while I find the desire to get momentum going towards ending global poverty to be admirable, I find their choice of color (for the band) to be puzzling. First, my guess is that most people in the world who suffer from poverty are probably darker skinned, not white.  So, to express solidarity with these people, why are we using a color that is the opposite of what these people have?

Second, white flags are used to signify surrender during war time. So, if this is a War on Poverty, why is the color of surrender being used?

Just curious.
